At the heart of a sustainable movement lies the Edible Trail, an innovative project launched by Cadogan Estate, the owner of the iconic hotel 11 Cadogan Garden and real estate complex in Chelsea, which boasts a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Established by Lord Chelsea, the estate spans 93 acres, extending from Sloane Square to the charming streets of Chelsea and Knightsbridge. Since its inception, Cadogan Estate has played a vital role in preserving and transforming Chelsea, contributing to its community-oriented atmosphere while supporting local businesses.

The Edible Trail encourages residents, passersby, and local enterprises to cultivate their own vegetable gardens along the famous Pavilion Road, promoting urban agriculture and creating a lively, dynamic environment. This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainability, with an environmentally considered approach that eliminates plastic pots, utilizes peat-free compost, and incorporates sustainable plant feed in the form of mulch. The compost used for the plants is crafted from wool and bracken, ensuring a natural and eco-friendly cultivation process.

Pavilion Road, known for being London’s longest mews, runs parallel to the luxurious Sloane Street and has undergone a complete transformation over the past two years. Once home to Victorian stables, this road has become a picturesque haven for independent artisans, forming a true “village hub” in response to Chelsea residents’ demand for local merchants. The street now hosts a fishmonger, butcher, bakery, grocery store, creamery, and wine shop, alongside several restaurants, including Hans’ Bar & Grill.

Further enhancing the initiative’s sustainability credentials is the water supply used to hydrate the various plants. This water is collected from tanks that gather rainwater beneath the road, ensuring that the gardens thrive while minimizing environmental impact.

Supporting Pollinators to protect Biodiversity

Through its honey initiative, 11 Cadogan Gardens participates in the Relais & Châteaux program, which today comprises 80 establishments worldwide committed to protecting bees and other pollinators, vital for our ecosystem and global food security.

This initiative aligns with the broader philosophy of Cadogan Estate, spearheaded by Peter Oates, Head of Gardens, who emphasizes the importance of preserving biodiversity, supporting the local food supply, and promoting a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
